Prescription Drug List Promotional guidelines for pharmaceutical companIES
This web site is intended to be a resource to assist pharmaceutical companies in evaluating the appropriate use of the UnitedHealthcare name in documents related to the UnitedHealthcare Prescription Drug List (PDL). Uses not addressed in this web site should be assumed to be inappropriate. UnitedHealth Pharmaceutical Solutions will not review, provide guidance, or comment on any pharmaceutical company promotional material.
Prescription drug list news and information
UnitedHealthcare has recently completed a review of the clinical, economic and pharmacoeconomic evidence of the asthma controller inhaler classes and will make several changes to our Prescription Drug List (PDL), effective May 1, 2007. The following document details the changes in the class and the rationale behind the decision. Interested pharmaceutical companies are welcome to print and/or use with physicians.

USE OF THE UNITEDHEALTHCARE NAME AND LOGO when reproducing the UHC Prescription drug List
Use of the UnitedHealthcare logo may only be used when the UnitedHealthcare PDL is reproduced. Reproductions must be in adherence with the following guidelines:
- Content of the PDL must not be altered or edited in any manner, with the exception of narrowing the content as provided below.
- If the content of the PDL in a particular therapeutic area is modified (i.e. all products within a class or tier are not listed as they appear on the PDL), the listing must include all products in Tiers 1 and 2 with a substantively similar therapeutic effect. The reproduction must also make a statement that the products listed do not represent all PDL alternatives for that therapeutic class and that the complete list for the relevant section of the PDL can be accessed through www.unitedhealthcareonline.com.
- Any reproduction of PDL information may not include product or manufacturer branding, or any logos or branding elements other than UnitedHealthcare’s.
USE OF THE UNITEDHEALTHCARE NAME ONLY in communications other than reproduction of the UHC pdl
Use of the UnitedHealthcare name may only be used in the following scenarios:
- A document that references multiple health plans and a product’s positioning on the UnitedHealthcare PDL. If the product is listed with a list of other formularies the list must reference the products' actual tier on the UHC PDL (it should not say things like "covered" or "preferred", etc.).
- A sticker or similar document that references a product name only, with or without branding, and its positioning on the UnitedHealthcare PDL. The sticker must be a standalone piece and should not make any other claims.
Note that these are the only appropriate uses of the UnitedHealthcare name with information that covers only the manufacturer’s product.
For all communications
Language describing the PDL must be consistent with UnitedHealthcare’s terminology, including:
- When referencing UnitedHealthcare members pharma should reference UnitedHealthcare "Commercial" members (versus Medicare, etc.)
- No use of the term “formulary”
- No reference to “preferred”, as the “P” in PDL is “Prescription”
- Do not create the UnitedHealthcare name so that it resembles the UHC logo.
- Do not use the UnitedHealthcare name in a primary or dominant position in the promotional item
Prescription drug list location
The UHC Prescription Drug List (PDL) can be found in the following locations:
- The physician PDL can be found at www.unitedhealthcareonline.com. In the top navigation click the link "Clinical Programs". In the left hand navigation click on the link "Pharmacy Programs".
- Member PDL's can be found in several places. The member PDL can be found at www.myuhc.com under the section on the Home Page "Links and Tools" called "Prescription Drug Information". Also available in Prescription Drug Information section is a online tool called "Price a medication" which members can use to understand tiers and/or pricing of medications on the UHC PDL. Although over 90% of UHC members access the pharmacy portal through www.myuhc.com, some do access pharmacy online by going to www.365wellst.com. The PDL is available there as well.- Once members are logged on to the Pharmacy Portal (via myuhc.com) they have access to a number of online tools that help them identify drug costs, tiers, etc. These tools are updated real time as PDL changes are made throughout the year.
